Robert Gwathmey: The Life and Art of Robert Gwathmey by Michael G. Kammen, X

American artist Robert Gwathmey (1903-1988) was a leading member of the Social Realist movement that flourished from the 1930s through the 1950s. Like his fellow Social Realists, Gwathmey used his art to expose privilege realist art and pretense, demand social justice, realist art and call for major changes in the prevailing socioeconomic system. Gwathmey was an eighth-generation Virginian, realist art and throughout his life his main artistic themes were race relations realist art and his native South. He is perhaps best remembered as the first white American painter to depict African Americans in an unromanticized, respectful manner. Using a unique style that combined a deliberate two-dimensional flatness with deep realist art and vivid colors, Gwathmey illuminated the inherent dignity of the tenant farmers realist art and sharecroppers who were his subjects. As a lifelong activist against injustice, Gwathmey was kept under surveillance by the FBI for nearly thirty years. Using Gwathmey's FBI file, along with numerous interviews realist art and archival records, Michael Kammen crafts a compelling portrait of an engaging American painter in the midst of dramatic social realist art and political change. The publication of this book coincides with the first major retrospective of Gwathmey's work, which will open in September at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. In November, the exhibition will move to the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, realist art and it will then travel to the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, the Telfair Academy of Arts realist art and Sciences in Augusta, Georgia, realist art and the Museum of American Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Realist art of the twentieth century is striking for its diversity. It has no shared style or manifesto of intention. Yet a common thread in realist art is a commitment to the modern world realist art and to things as they are. This book examines realism in Europe realist art and America, beginning with its roots in the aims of Gustave Courbet in nineteenth-century France. The realist outlook is exemplified in the work of Georg Grosz in his observations of urban life in Weimar Germany or, in America, in the high focus paintings of Edward Hopper realist art and Grant Wood. The author also examines the so-called "socialist realism" of Stalin's Soviet Union realist art and the condemnation in Germany of artists not conforming to Nazi academic-realist demands. He describes French realist art and Italian painting between the wars realist art and the political intentions of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. British realists, among them Stanley Spencer, Lucian Freud realist art and David Hockney, are discussed in detail, as are the Pop artists Richard Hamilton realist art and Andy Warhol.
